Baalath

Baalath
A generic name for goddess in the Middle East, frequently applied to the titular deity of a particular town. The Baalath of Byblos was Ashtart. The word itself means lady or mistress, and would seem to be of greater antiquity than Baal. Baalath was most frequently applied to Ninlil, consort of Enlil, but was also given to the wife of Asshur or as a variant of Ishtar. In Egypt she was known as Baelthi. To the Canaanites she was Venus, the evening star.
